Q. Why do the children receive homework?

  • GRADE SCHOOL- If the child is unable to complete homework within the 2 hour time frame the teacher should be made aware. Homework given will be adjusted commiserate with what the child can complete within the timeframe. The teachers goal is always to enhance the level of comprehensive learning without compromising the child's desire to learn with too much homework.
  • PRE-SCHOOL- Homework is supposed to be an activity given to the children to encourage children to work closely with parents at home. We encourage children to practice at home and follow-up with children at least 3 times during the week. It is okay for children to skip homework if they are not in the mood but please try to have them practice at least 3 times a week.- Do Not Force your child to complete the homework if they are having a hard time, but keep in close communication with the teachers to figure out how to help your child ease into homework time.

Q. How do we handle difficult behavior?

  • PRE-SCHOOL- When pre-school children are being disruptive during an activity we do our best to repeat the rules (we ask nicely if we need something, hands are for hugging not for hitting, use inside voices, etc.) If children still fail to follow the rules we then redirect them to a new activity. If they are still disruptive they must then have time out for the number of minutes equal to their age.  If these problems continue we will ask for a meeting with the parents.
  • GRADE SCHOOL- There is a NO TOLERANCE policy for children that do not behave. Please refer to the discipline policy. At this time we are fortunate enough to have a professional on site that does daily visits in each classroom to support the teachers in altering the classroom environment and the routine to get the best out of each child. The school does everything we can before we put the steps of the discipline policy into effect.---The discipline policy is a step process that includes open communication with parents regarding the child’s behavior. 1) Parent is called 2) Parent must immediately pick up child from directors office and have an immediate meeting 3) Child will be suspended from school for the # of days to be determined by the director based on the action.

Q. In what ways can I help my child improve in weak areas?

  • We will provide some suggestions with fun activities that parents can do with the child at home to strengthen these areas of concern. We do not suggest writing, tracing or rote activities. Instead, we make suggestions that the parents can do such as games to play while fixing dinner, riding or walking home, fun weekend games, board games, etc.

Q. Will my child be ready for the next grade?

  • It is always our goal to prepare your child for the next grade. We acheive this by providing smaller classes resouce enhancements and tutoring if needed. With your help we can partner together to help the child prepare for the next grade.

Q. Is there a dress code policy?

  • All pre-kindergarden and grade school children must be in uniform each day. The uniform is sold at the main building with A Child’s Place emblem on each item. Accessories that parents must provide are shoes which must be black or blue, socks, tights, etc. that must be blue, black, white (or yellow for girls only).
  • All toddlers should dress confortably each day and be prepared for physical and messy activities.

Q. What can I do as a parent to help in the classroom?

Q. What was taken into consideration when giving report card marks? GRADESCHOOL

  • The subject grade which gives a grade of A-F is based solely on the average of test grades. Grades which appear below are effort codes and these grades are derived from the amount of effort a child puts into each subject. These grades can be very different. For example a child may score poorly on tests and therefore receive a D in math on the top subject grade, however, the same child may receive all E’s on effort codes because they participate, ask questions in class, completes all the homework and demonstrates the ability to try to understand the work.

Q. Will my child be able to retest if they fail a test?

  • Children are only allowed to receive a retest if more than 50% of the class fails the test. If this is the case the teachers will re-teach the subject and retest the students.

Q. How do I help my child learn to stop hitting, biting or throwing tantrums?

  • Children are physically aggressive when they can’t verbalize what they want. The way to teach children to stop communicating physically is to encourage them to use their words. Each time the child uses physical communication to communicate their needs, remind them to use their words and do not give them what they want until they use their words. For more information please see tips for parents.

Q. What techniques are used to encourage toilet training?

  • Use positive language and a rewards system. Each time the child uses the toilet give them a sticker on a chart, or sing an encouraging GOOD JOB song, clap for the child, celebrate! When the child does not use the toilet do not chastise them, just remind them to use the toilet and encourage them for next time. If the child refuses to use the bathroom, do not force them, maybe they are not ready.

Q. How do you teach children to share?

  • In a classroom setting teachers should request a multiple amount of the children’s favorite toys. This will help children not to have to give up their favorite toys all the time. In addition, you could encourage children to share by giving them a timer, let them set the time for 5 minutes or so and when the timer goes off they have to share with their friends.
